#Rajasthani #Traditional #FolkSong - #Chirmi - with #RavanHattha : B...

Have you heard about #RavanHattha? a string musical instrument but having a very unusual name? Ravan? it is a wonder how come such name was given to this instrument?

This is commonly used with #Rajasthani Folk Singing.

Here is a traditional song from our #Rangilo Rajasthan. When you entre Rajasthan we see ourselves surrounded with all kinds of vibrant colors. Different costumes full of colors, Turbans- Pag or Pagdi as I call it in UP, all are different in colors and even different styles. There are many versions of Turbans, Safa-Pagadi-Pags depending on regions of Rajsathan. As it happens in our traditional Indian Society even colors or dress code is different in various regions and sections of society. Even in America they had such differentiation.

The traditional songs reflect our daily life and various colors of Life. Have you seen Hindi film RUDALI? In our Indian traditions We have songs for occasions of sorrow? this is richness of our traditions. Same is said to be taught in Geeta or Mahabharat. As the soul the Atma never dies? it simply changes the Garb- that is body?

Fire cannot burn the Soul-Atma, nor any weapon can kill Aatma?

So these singers sing those songs that remind us of our own great traditional knowledge. We must hear, conserve them. before they die out? Just as a society, we have to help, patronize these art forms.

This reminds of Tradition of BHOPA and Bhopi singers in Rajasthan. They sing many songs in priase of lord also some fo the folk songs based on local stories that society has kept as treasure and passed on with Oral tradition. In India we have very rich Oral tradition of passing on knowledge from generation to generations.

'Sun Mhaari Surta' by Jamali Bai

Have you thought? as to how KABIR came to Desert of Rajasthan?

There are so many pearls in our society, but we have forgoten? As i said earlier our society has failed to recognise the real pearls of wisdom of our great Indian Heritage.

May be due to the Legacy of British Raaj? But time has come now to rethink about our own Indian Cultural roots? And Kabir is one among them.

See how Jamali Bai ji sang a Kabir thought. She belonged to a traditional singing community in interiors of Rajasthan. But how she got to sing Kabir? Such was our great vast empire of Indian Traditions. Eeven AdiShankaracharya Roamed around India and If i may say so he can be credited to be among those who tried to Unite our India.

'Mhaari Kaaya Ra Kartaar' sings Kashi Ba

We have failed as a society, that should have patronized such great talents among us?

A great heritage is being lost in front of us. They are common people and amongst us, from this- our own society only? they are not from out side. These are Pearls who have kept our traditions, Indian ethos alive since centuries.

Will you consider them educated or not? doesnt matter, they are part of our rich Indian heritage. A continuation of our Indian Philosophy. Our society has been living and continuing since centuries and such pearls had been apearing within our society, but very few have been recognised.

She refers to the Gorakhnath, Gorakh, even such singers sing about Kabir. Kabir has been famous for his simple approach towards anything and everything. He had not thought like a Pandit. For every thing every enet that happens in society, he applied logical mind and came out with a plausible question, Those questions many times became difficult to be answered by Pandits of that time. Some time i feel as in recent times we had seen Anna Hazare with a people's movement. He also raised few questions prevalent among our society. For that system the governance did not have any clear answer, thus his questioning became Anti-Establishment.

But in our daily Life such people like this Singer? how can we call her a singer? She is a lady living simple but hard life. From Morning to Night daily is a struggle to survive? She is selling fruit on streets but inside her heart she ahs great thinking. That has been propunded in Mahabhrata or Geeta or any name you want to give. That moto is live life do your duty? Ram is a giver? He gives?
Salute to such great people among us, but we have have blind eyes? like Dhritrasthtra?
She looks like a forgotten yester years Singer, now at this age is unable to sustain herself. In our Society those singers belonging to that community were looked dwon upon. In absence of Rich Patrons, Kings, Zamindars, Courts such women of yore suffered the most.
But yes waht she is singing she knows the meaning also. Have you noticed in these songs? But most of her surroundings (people) are ignorant about the verses and thier meanings. But She is at pains that there is no one to understand all this stuff. She must have been quite educated, as i feel. Education doesnt mean that she has got degrees? Kabir was not educated? Yet we sing his creations, even today?
